Kafui Sawyer (Director)

















Kafui is a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and a member of the Canadian Psychological Association. Kafui is the Founder and Executive Director of Joy Health and Research Centre based in Ottawa, Canada. The goal of Joy Health and Research Centre is to promote resiliency and social emotional life skills for individuals, families, schools and faith communities and to assess and treat mental illness. Kafui is well-vested in promoting positive mental health across communities through research in mental health and program evaluation.


Kafui specializes in Child, Youth, Adult, and Family Therapy; Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Trauma Therapy and Addictions Counselling. Kafui completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Theology from the University of Ottawa and Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Ontario. Kafui then furthered her education in the Master of Arts Counselling Psychology Program at Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. Kafui received her clinical training from the Ministry of Children and Family Development in British Columbia. With a passion for working with children and youth with excellency and competency as a Child Therapist, Kafui pursued more supervised clinical training in child therapy from Dr. Bart Begalka
and Associates, a Private Clinical Practice in British Columbia.


Prior to becoming a mental health consultant on preventing mental illness, Kafui received further training in mental health programs from world renowned Australian Psychologist, Dr. Paula Barrett, whose extensive work on prevention programs has been recognized by the World Health Organization.


Kafui is a clinical supervisor for practitioners in psychotherapy as well as graduate students (Masters’ and PhD) in counselling and psychotherapy programs. Kafui also works for Health Canada providing individual, couples, family and trauma counselling. Kafui is a certified facilitator of the Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR) Program developed by the Department of National Defence and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.


With an interest in community wellness programs and mental health promotion, Kafui continues to be involved in mental health literacy programs, youth consultation, suicide prevention training, couples’ workshops, and resiliency training for children, adolescents, and adults.


Kafui believes that her Christian spirituality, passion and enthusiasm for mental health initiatives
help individuals and families build a mentally healthy community together.
